Grupo CASSA Produced More than 388 Million kWh from Sugarcane Bagasse
One of the current trends that drive sustainability and commitment to the environment is the production of renewable energy aimed at reducing impact on the carbon footprint. Grupo CASSA, through the combustion of sugarcane bagasse, supplies energy to the entire production line and delivers energy to Salvadoran homes. Thus, it has managed to generate more than 388 million kilowatt hours (kWh) by 2022.
“We are self-sustainable during the harvest period. This means that we do not use fuel to operate the mills, we use sugarcane bagasse as fuel. Sugarcane is an energy machine! The Central Izalco and Chaparrastique sugar mill power plants together inject 63 megawatts (MW) into the country’s electrical grid, reaching 238,000 homes. Our duty is to the land, and we are taking advantage of natural resources to deliver benefits to every home,” says Fermina Cardenas, Director of Corporate Relations of Grupo CASSA.
CASSA, a Development Engine
In terms of social commitment to the communities surrounding the production areas, 12,682 direct jobs were created in 2022. In addition to the fact that its raw material comes from 2,406 sugarcane producers allied to the company, CASSA seeks to increase its suppliers through its “Sugarcane Schools” that train farmers in efficient planting and harvesting.
Currently, Grupo CASSA has 81 sustainability committees representing 19,000 families in sugarcane communities throughout 12 municipalities with the objective of making them our partners in the territory’s sustainability.
A Genuine Commitment
At Grupo CASSA we have a genuine commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability. Our approach consists of producing more with less, being more efficient, decarbonizing our production processes and becoming more circular because today, more than ever, it is crucial to care for and protect our home: ¡planet Earth!
